CHAPTER 16

After the morning drama, April was almost late for the weekly crochet club meeting. After going home to check in on BamBam and walk Ralph, she rushed into town, armed with her newest work-in-progress, a tote bag that looked nothing like the luxury Dolce & Gabbana piece she’d been trying to emulate.

Parking on the corner of Main Street, she rushed into the library. She blew out a sigh of relief when she found that the space was still fairly quiet. Josephine had laid out a plate of golden-orange cookies on the table, and Heather’s crochet hook was already swooping through her thick white yarn, but the rest of the club hadn’t gathered yet.

Lucy appeared from behind the front desk with a tray of tea, brightening when she saw April. “Hey, hon. Glad to see you!”

“Ready for dinner tonight, Luce?” April chirped, resisting the urge to rub her hands together conspiratorially. She couldn’t wait to bang Lucy and Erik’s heads together. Gently. Forcefully. Supportively!

Lucy only tensed. “Do we really have to do this dinner thing with Erik?” She shuddered when saying his name, which only put a minor dent in April’s steadfast hope. Erik and Lucy belonged together. They would see it sooner or later.

“Oh, come on, sweet,” Josephine assured Lucy, giving her a playful flick on the cheek. “It’ll be good fun. Don’t you think Erik deserves the benefit of the doubt? He’s obviously a good guy. He’s the town’s most hardworking volunteer!”

Lucy’s answer was a husky “Whatever,” and she quickly busied herself by setting out yarn, hooks, and stitch markers.

A pang of panic ran through April when she realized that she hadn’t had time to buy groceries for tonight’s gathering, but shortages of ingredients were a thing of a past now that The Lynch Pin had opened its doors. She was sure Reuben would help her later. If only she knew what to cook.

“You don’t happen to have a recipe for a yummy dessert that you wouldn’t mind sharing with your old pal, would you, Jo?” April batted her lashes in her best attempt at persuasion.

Josephine was known to keep her more elaborate recipes a secret, and her deadpan resolve suggested she was about do that now. “Depends what you’re thinking of. I love you, sweet, but you’re not that great at cooking. I don’t want you butchering my desserts.”

April pouted, working hard to display her puppy-dog eyes. While Lucy was distracted by organizing, she leaned closer and whispered, “Food is the language of love, remember. How will we get Lucy and Erik together without a romantic cake?”

The baker sighed, and April knew she’d won her over. “Alright. I guess I can give you something. I’m thinking a bundt cake, maybe with fruit and zest and a dash of chocolate.”

“Sounds great! Thank you, Jo.”

After giving her friend a tight squeeze, April relaxed into her chair despite her hectic day. She was eager to pull out her yarn and unwind, thoughts still lost in theories and questions about Damien’s death.
